Jungle Gym
This body of work documents an installation of biomorphic and organic forms conjoined with workout equipment entitled "Jungle Gym". Themes of interdependence between humanity and nature, the impact of human activity on the global climate, and loss of habitat and species extinction are alluded to in this installation. Despite the weighty nature of the subject, visual and verbal puns are employed to remind us of the regenerative power of nature and the practice of positive action. The workout equipment stands as a metaphor for how we might find surprising and healthy relationships between manufactured products/processes and natural rhythms as we "work out" a balanced, mutualistic relationship to our world. The weights are symbolic of the scale of these issues, as well as a metaphor for the heaviness and sense of loss we experience due to extinctions of habitat and species. We go to the gym to keep healthy, this installation suggests the natural order of things depends on a healthy planet as well.
